I have followed the sport a long time and i don’t remember Mitch giving much of an interview to anyone so I was very interested in what he had to say and he answered well.  For example, instead of too many comments about Ty or not he stated how some of his riders only had one or their only win with him putting in perspective that it was in fact just 1 win so far.  At the same time i liked rhe comparison with Levi where even though he seemed off his game at High Point Mitch has confidence he will win again as his first and existing investment.  He knows Haiden or his dad is coming with the heat so he is already thinking about getting back to work.  Ty shouldn’t be expecting to get sponsored this early in the season or after just 1 win and he doesn’t need an agent but i like the idea of putting  Mitch on the spot since he is usually so Willy Wonka secretive even about stuff like who’s riding what coast.  No one has to answer but a journalist can sure ask, and appreciate that Mitch wasn’t intimidated too much to answer. Mitch must be a good bike tuner and probably invented the term “silencer” about keeping his exhaust top secret.

I was surprised and impressed how blessed and stoked Ty was to get a ride with PC and that was after stepping down from a good 450 showing so that illustrates the importance of being on a good team and building a  career that way.  The trend has been towards privateering but there’s a lot of help it looks like you can’t get on your own.  But i like Mitch’s attitude that once the gate drops it’s on the rider to perform no matter what pipe is bolted to his ass.

I was not asking Mitch to agree, I was letting Mitch share his assesment of Ty as there’s been an opinion formed of Ty. Mitch has worked with him one-on-one and is qualified to speak to what he’s actually experienced and hopefully clear it up.

He said astigmatism because Ty may have an eye that is not perfectly round.  There’s nothing wrong with Ty or his riding.  About his history he has a high achieving family who likes to do their own 125 degree training program and similar to letting Levi train in Florida Mitch just said he is on his way back to Texas where everything is bigger there.

Mitch is smart and realistic. Yes it was a great win, but there’s a lot of races left. It was cool to see the PC bike up front again.

That was the point ML was making.  No matter the situation Mitch finds a person to step in and rise up to be a contender or take the win for them on a green bike like even under the worst circumstances i.e. this year with all the injuries at the last minute.  The term in MX for 1 win is proving against a “fluke” so why not grease Ty’s wheels with the big boss writing the bonus checks.

Mitch and PC has some of the most trusted tuning for all sized bikes.  It was cool to see Ty step down and have success ‘like Mitch can help create’ nothing against Ty but makes me wonder why Mitch doesn’t run a 450 bike under his tent.  Hard to believe one of the most successful coaches and tuners prefers the smaller bikes when some people give more credentials to the bigger class like where Roger and Lars oversee both.  That’s 300 wins of people just on Kawasaki bikes and at the 125/250 level on his team for the past 35 years.  Just imagine if he counted all the riders who use his bolt-ons and mods.  It doesn’t mean Ty wouldn’t have found success without PC but it shows how quick they can work out something together knowing a rider’s style and setup.  Mitch says he considers himself a tuner first so I bet he could dial in a lot of riders better with a just a few days of testing.  Add onto that Mitch having a family and finding a way to get to the races in a wheelchair paralyzed plus running one of the biggest businesses in the biz.  I’d be impressed if he could have just mentored the kids 300 times let alone towards wins against all the other manufacturers and up and coming talent.  About Ty’s history he’s got extra motivation and heart having lost his brother so hopefully they will help keep his spirit alive with a Jesse sticker or 2 from DeCal Works.

1
